Erling Haaland's quiet night in Madrid didn't go unnoticed by his Manchester City teammates, who are already plotting how to ensure the striker is more effective at the Etihad next week.
Real Madrid defended deep to stop Haaland being as effective as he usually is, and that resulted in a fascinating tactical battle where both sides scored from long-range efforts. City will be pleased with their adaptation to Real's plan for Haaland, and also their mentality after falling behind - but that doesn't mean the squad are content with a similar game in next week's second leg.
City are looking to reach a second-ever Champions League final, and midfielder Rodri believes finding Haaland more often will be key at the Etihad next Wednesday.

“We played with four in the build-up and then John [Stones] moved up as a second midfielder," Rodri explained. "We know the quality they have. Having three at the back was a bit risky.
“We didn’t find [Haaland] a lot – he was well covered by the centre-backs. The space wasn’t there. We have to find more space and change the dynamic of the situations when we break the lines. It’s not easy because they defend very narrow, and don’t allow you to go on the outside. We have to improve that for the next game.
“We have a massive game at home. We will need our people and everything to try to get to the final. With the help of the people, we can do it and we have to believe in ourselves.”
Rodri's assessment was echoed by Manu Akanji - drafted in at left-back for the game in Nathan Ake's absence - with the defender reflecting on how spaces emerged as Real focussed their attentions on Haaland.
He explained: “They had a game plan. We had spaces with Rodri and John [Stones], we played well from the back and found spaces in midfield. Maybe it’s something we can improve on for next week.
“I never had any expectation of the game. We just take it the way it is - be in the moment, think about the next action and be ready for it. It’s a good situation to be in with the result. We have to give our best and hopefully that’s enough to go through.
“We’ve been working all season long to be in a position like this. It’s a big game - it doesn’t get much bigger. The atmosphere should be great - it’s a Champions League semi-final and the last game a thome in the competition this season. I’m really looking forward to it.”
