Rod Stewart pays tribute to Ukraine during emotional Glasgow gig

Rockstar Rod Stewart paid an emotional tribute to Ukraine during his gig at Glasgow's OVO Hydro.

Sir Rod's show featured images of the war-torn country during the singer's performance of 'Rhythm of My Heart'. The snaps were shared with the audience on the huge screen at the back of the stage during the emotional two hour set.

The 77-year-old even sported a yellow jacket and blue shirt - the colours of the Ukraine flag - during the show in another touching tribute.

The singer has rented and furnished a home for seven Ukrainian refugees to help provide support during the ongoing conflict.

At the end of the song, Sir Rod turned to the screen to salute an image of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, saying: “What a guy", reports The Daily Record.

Before setting off on a UK area tour last month, the rockstar said he planned to address the conflict during his performances, dedicating shows to the besieged country and the it's brave people.

The Maggie May signer explained that he wanted to use his "power" to help others.

Sir Rod previously hired three trucks to drive supplies to help Ukrainian refugees, using the same vehicles to transport 16 people to safety in Berlin, Germany.

The singer said: “The bombing of innocent children, the bombing of hospitals and playgrounds. Like everyone else, we were completely beside ourselves. I don’t wish that on anyone. This is evil, pure evil.”

Around 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers and more than 6,500 civilans have lost their lives - including 400 children - since Russia's invasion on February 24 this year.

Rebuilding Ukraine following the devastation caused will cost an estimated $1trillion, according to Kyiv authorities, and the amount keeps spiralling upwards.
