Rockstar teases 'big' GTA Online update this summer amid more GTA Plus perks

While the world anxiously awaits the release of GTA 6, the game’s developer is readying a significant update for GTA Online.

Players of the popular online crime caper can expect a “big” new content drop this summer, Rockstar revealed in a new blog post devoted to its GTA Plus subscription.

We don’t know much else other than it will offer subscribers the chance to bag a new bonus supercar. But, seeing as this could be GTA Online’s swansong before the arrival of GTA 6 in 2025, here’s hoping Rockstar goes out with a bang.

Set in a fictional version of Los Angeles, GTA Online turns players into enterprising criminals through several daring heists and risky business ventures. The virtual cash you earn from your nefarious schemes can be splurged on lavish properties, pricey motors, and many deadly toys, including a $3.8 million (£3m) fighter jet.

Since its release in 2013, Rockstar has pumped in a steady stream of new content to keep GTA Online players amused. Nightclubs and a massive casino were added to the game in 2018 and 2019. A new island location called Cayo Perico followed in 2020. Pivotal characters from GTA 5 have also crossed over to the online mode as part of new storylines.

What could the GTA summer update include?

With the game now in its twilight years, recent updates have been lackluster by comparison. Some fans have slammed Rockstar for falling back on the same assortment of new heists, missions, vehicles, and rewards.

Scepticism is rife online, with players sharing their wishlists for the new updates without getting their hopes up. Gamers are clamouring for new businesses including strip clubs; the return of GTA 5 protagonists Michael and Franklin in a final storyline mission; and more rural locations including purchasable motels and bars.

Summing up the mood among players, a Reddit user wrote: “Big update huh? More like 6 contact missions with 20k payout.”

“Oh no, you forgot to mention that those 6 contract Missions will have double Money and RP at launch,” read a scathing reply from another person.

“The "big update" is them just nerfing Cayo again,” said another Reddit user about the Cayo Perico heist.

How much is GTA Plus?

Alongside word of the new update, Rockstar’s latest blog post reveals several new perks for GTA Plus subscribers.

For £4 per month, members receive a recurring $500,000 (£395,500) virtual payout; a free vehicle and discounts at the Vinewood Car Club; special Shark cards loaded with more in-game cash; and access to a rotating set of exclusive events with bonus items up for grabs.

From April to August, Rockstar will dole out an extra $1 million (£790,000) monthly to subscribers on top of their regular payment. In addition, a new Vehicle Workshop is being added to the Vinewood Club Garage, with a new in-game smartphone app for members to access its special features.

Subscribers will also be able to nab two Rockstar classics in LA Noire and Bully later this year at no extra cost. The games are being added to the titles already available to GTA Plus members. These include Red Dead Redemption, GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, GTA: Liberty City Stories and GTA: Chinatown Wars.
