Over the weekend, numerous work-in-progress screenshots and videos of GTA 6 leaked online — well before the game was anywhere close to complete. As you might expect, developer Rockstar Games isn’t happy about it.
On Monday, Rockstar released a statement regarding the leak – confirming that most footage floating around online is genuine and indeed from GTA 6.
“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,” Rockstar said on Twitter. “We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way.”
“Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto games will continue as planned, and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations,” Rockstar continues. “We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this game when it is ready. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.”
Since the initial leaks, publisher 2K has been taking down all screenshots and videos of GTA 6 via copyright strikes and legal notices. Everything ‘official’ out there is nowhere close to complete since GTA 6 is still years away.
