The Houston Rockets signed center Alperen Sengun and guard Jalen Green to contract extensions this past offseason. Sengun agreed to a five-year, $185 million extension, and Green inked a three-year, $105.3 million deal. However, one of these stars has yet to secure a long-term future with the team.
Alperen Sengun Is ‘Unlikely’ To Be Traded; Jalen Green Could Be Moved For The Right Price
Per Spotrac, Green’s extension has a poison pill restriction until July 1, 2025, but he can still be traded. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, although Sengun is “unlikely” to be traded after signing his multi-year extension, Green is currently on the trade block.
“Jalen Green was floated in trade rumors last season for former Brooklyn Nets swingman Mikal Bridges and has since signed a three-year $105.3 million extension,” Scotto wrote. “Despite the extension, NBA executives across the league believe Green won’t be off limits in future trade discussions.”
Green, who is also in his fourth season, is averaging 18.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game this year while shooting career lows of 39.3% from the field and 31.7% from 3-point range.
While Green had a breakout sophomore season in 2022-23, he has shown little improvement since then. That could explain why the Rockets are willing to trade the 22-year-old.
Houston May Decide To Keep Both Sengun And Green
As Scotto mentioned, Houston mulled the prospect of trading Green to the Nets for Mikal Bridges, though Bridges was sent to the New York Knicks and Green stayed put with the Rockets.
Considering the Rockets are 15-6 and second in the Western Conference standings, a big shakeup in Houston’s roster might not be necessary at this time. Unless injuries begin piling up soon, the Rockets may decide to keep the players they already have.
Sengun, who is in his fourth season in the NBA, is coming off the best year of his career when he averaged 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.2 steals, and 32.5 minutes in 63 games (all starts).
Through 21 games (all starts) this campaign, he’s averaging 18.8 points, career highs of 10.9 boards and 5.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per contest. The 6-foot-11 big man was recently named the Western Conference Player of the Week.
Green scored a season-high 41 points at Philadelphia on Nov. 27.
