The Rockets were pursuing guard depth with their remaining resources in 2023 free agency. Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, they’ve found a potential solution in former Atlanta Hawks point guard Aaron Holiday, who signed with Houston on a one-year deal. The contract is for the NBA’s minimum salary, The Athletic reports.
Now 26 years old, Holiday is well regarded for his combination of on-ball defense, steady ball-handling, and strong 3-point shooting. Over the last two seasons, the 6-foot-0 guard has averaged 5.1 points (39.3% on 3-pointers) and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes per game.
Based on his size, Holiday is likely limited to a point-guard role. However, with Kevin Porter Jr. presumably shifting to more wing usage in the 2023-24 season, that could open up more floor-general opportunities within the offense of new head coach Ime Udoka.
Holiday will join rookie Amen Thompson as backup options at point guard behind newly signed veteran Fred VanVleet. Other veteran free agents signed by the Rockets during the 2023 free agency window include Dillon Brooks, Jock Landale, and Jeff Green.
Free agent G Aaron Holiday has agreed to a one-year deal with the Houston Rockets, sources tell ESPN.
