Rockets honor San Diego era, showcase new uniforms with Jalen Green mural

As part of their 55th anniversary season, the Houston Rockets are honoring their franchise origins in San Diego, where they played from 1967 until 1971, with custom green-and-gold throwback uniforms. Made by Nike, the Hardwood Classic jerseys will be worn at least six times during the 2022-23 season.

The Rockets aren’t stopping with the jerseys, though, and they also aren’t waiting until the 2022-23 season begins in October.

Local artist Floyd Mendoza, who recently designed a Houston-area mural to honor Uvalde shooting victims, unveiled a new mural in East Downtown featuring rising Rockets star Jalen Green. In that mural, Green is shown going in for a dunk wearing both the team’s current uniforms and the newly released Classic version, with the skylines and logos of both San Diego and Houston as the backdrop.

“History propels us forward,” the mural reads. The mural includes a rocket lifting off with the letters NBA on it, with a San Diego tribute on the left and current Houston threads on the right.

Fans wanting to take a picture with or of the new mural can view it in-person at 2101 Polk St., just a few blocks east of Toyota Center.
