Rocker Liam Gallagher swaps backstage booze for Quavers crisps to stay sober

There were no Cigarettes & Alcohol for Liam Gallagher on the first night of his epic Knebworth stint.

The rocker’s dressing room was cleared of booze on Friday to make sure he stayed sober ahead of last night’s finale – opting instead for tea, honey and bags of Quavers crisps.

Mum Peggy and his kids cheered him on from the side of the stage in what was a more sedate family affair.

But by this evening , the festivities had turned wild, with bottles of port and whisky along with crates of beer and Guinness.

A backstage source tells me: “Liam was on his best behaviour on Friday. He had a police escort back to his house and was munching crisps and drinking tea.

“He wanted to make sure his mum Peggy was all sorted. She went back to Manchester and then he got in party mode yesterday.”

A total of 160,000 people gathered at Knebworth over two nights for an epic, nostalgic re-run of the mega-shows that Oasis headlined there in 1996. Liam looked the part – sporting a near identical white raincoat to the one he wore at the gigs 26 years ago.

Opening the show he dedicated Hello to former Oasis bandmate Bonehead who is undergoing cancer treatment – a touching tribute to his close pal.

His superfans cheered, threw beer and chanted as he got through his own solo hits including Shockwave, Wall of Glass and Why Me? Why Not.

But it was Oasis hits Some Might Say, Wonderwall and Live Forever which had the whole crowd singing along.

In a romantic touch he also sang Slide Away for fiancée Debbie Gwyther – and got the crowd to call her a “guru”.

The pair, along with mum Peggy, had arrived by helicopter during Kasabian’s warm-up set.

Ending with a champagne supernova of fireworks to accompany the song of the same name, there was a guest appearance from John Squire, The Stone Roses’ guitarist.

Having a drink with Liam in one of his Highgate locals, it’s rare for a conversation not to steer into his love of the Stone Roses – so having Squire on stage would have meant a lot.

With his latest album C’Mon You Know topping the music charts this weekend, Some Might Say Liam is a man at the top of his game.
