Tributes paid to 'rock star' dad who did 'so much' for Liverpool music scene

A dad who toured all over the world in a Led Zeppelin tribute band has died of cancer.

Peter James Tulloch, from Bootle, went to the doctors with a persistent cough on April 6 this year and was rushed to hospital on the same day. Doctors then told him he had an aggressive form of bowel cancer that had spread to the rest of his body.

The drummer was a well-known musician in Liverpool having played in bands across the city. After fighting cancer for just under three months he died on Sunday, July 2 at the age of 62.

His daughter Holly Tulloch said her dad was a true gentleman and that he would do anything to help people. The 26-year-old said she is still coming to terms with her dad's death and keeps thinking he will "come home".

Holly told the ECHO: "My mum took him to the doctor because he didn't want help and wanted to push on through. It was confirmed a couple of weeks later.

"It was all so quick. Less than three months ago he was sitting next to me saying how he was going to fight. I keep thinking he is just away on tour and will come home in a couple of weeks."

An "international rock star"- 'Pete the Beat' as he was affectionally known- got his big break at 52 when he began touring the globe with the world's premium Led Zeppelin tribute band Letz Zep. Aside from his musical career he was also a bricklayer and worked on the construction of the new Cavern Club after it was demolished to make way for the new underground Merseyrail line in 1984.

Holly, 26, said: "My dad was never a sick man and doctors were alarmed by the scans... The music industry can be a hard place to be in but nobody had a bad word to say about him and everyone he played with has told me how kind he was.

“He was just so kind and a true gentleman and if you asked him to be there for you he would. No matter what he was doing he would go out of his way to help other people.”

Peter toured the world with Letz Zep and also had a music studio in the 1980s called Alchemy and recorded with artists such as Cilla Black and The La's.

Holly said: “He was such a humble man. He always played his achievements down and was a selfless person. He did so much for music in the city and was so good at what he did.

“I could never put into words how much he meant to me and he is the reason I became a musician. I had a rare bond with my dad and going through what I am now is something I do not want to do without him.”

Peter’s funeral will be held on Thursday, 13, July at Thornton Crematorium. A memorial concert in his honour, taking place at the Cavern Club on Sunday, July 16, has been organised by musicians Peter played with throughout his life.
