'Robinson rule' after councillor shirtless in meeting

Newcastle councillors will have to wear clothes in online council meetings under a new code of meeting practice on exhibition.

The clause for councillors to be "appropriately dressed" was included in the NSW Office of Local Government's Model Code of Meeting Practice after former Independent councillor Allan Robinson appeared "unclothed" in an online meeting last year.

Mr Robinson said at the time he had been sitting in dirty work clothes and removed them so his wife could put them in the wash.

Deputy lord mayor Declan Clausen described the rule as the "Newcastle clause", while councillor John Mackenzie dubbed it the "Robinson clause".

"Nice to get recognition, I guess, from the state government of our council. It doesn't happen all that often," Cr Mackenzie said.
