Robin Koch pinpoints two crucial summer factors behind Leeds United's improvement

Robin Koch believes the summer was vital for Leeds United to ensure they produce an improvement on last season. The Whites narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the campaign and oversaw a summer of changes.

Leeds brought in a number of new signings, with five of them already having established themselves as regulars in the starting XI. It also provided Jesse Marsch with a prolonged period of time on the training field to implement his ideas on the squad after the high pressure situation he was thrown into at the back end of last season.

In an interview with Sport Buzzer, Koch believes the squad is much stronger as a whole this time around and thinks the preparation on the training ground learning Marsch’s ideas was very important.

He said: “We had extreme injury problems last season and slipped into the bottom. We strengthened ourselves well in the summer, our squad is now broader, we have high quality.

“It was also important to have a complete preparation with Jesse Marsch. It was simply a matter of keeping us in the league. He used the summer to teach us his idea of the game.

“We defend more collectively under him. That’s the main difference to Marcelo Bielsa. There, we defended more man-to-man.

“I was able to learn a lot under him (Bielsa) and have developed a lot thanks to him. He is crazy about football and has incredible expertise. He demands a lot. The training is extremely intense. You have to follow along as a player and be willing to learn.”
