Andy Robertson believes that Scotland reaped the benefit of Steve Clarke’s consistent squad selection as the national team sealed a momentous 2-0 victory over Spain.
Scott McTominay scored either side of half-time to ensure the Scots’ Euro 2024 qualifying campaign began with back-to-back wins as the players fought doggedly for the three points.
And while the Scotland skipper was delighted with the nature of the team’s display, he warned that the team still have some way to go in their bid to reach Germany next summer.
“We knew we had to try and get off to a good start,” Robertson told Viaplay. “We knew we had to put them under pressure and get the fans with us and I think we did a really good job of that.
“When you score so early doors you fall back a bit and we were defending to deep at the end of the first half. We had to try and push ourselves up and I think the second half was a really professional performance. It shows you how far we have come.
“The gaffer has been quite consistent with the squads he has picked and you can see that with the number of caps we have got.
“When he first took over there wasn’t much experience and now we have got a lot of lads on high thirties, low forties [of caps gained] and I think that really helps in these games.
“You have to dip into your experience. And then we make subs, [Liam] Cooper and [Kenny] McLean come on and kill the game. It was a top performance from us.
“We had belief. When the gaffer took over that’s what was lacking. There was a kind of disconnect between the players and the fans. We were only maybe getting 15,000 if we were lucky but let me tell you, playing in front of a full crowd makes a massive difference.
“You have to back that up with performances and I think we did that tonight. There was a belief in the camp that we could get a good result here but it is important that we all don’t get carried away.
“We have got six points, which is a great start, but unfortunately six points doesn’t qualify you for the Euros.”
