Roberto Firmino suffers World Cup blow as Liverpool duo given Brazil call-up

Roberto Firmino has suffered World Cup heartache after the Liverpool striker was left out of Brazil's squad for the forthcoming tournament.

Firmino - who featured in the 2018 finals for his country - has been overlooked by national team boss Tite, who named his 26-man party for the competition on Monday.

However, both Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and Fabinho have been included in the squad. Brazil, one of the favourites for the tournament, have been drawn in Group G where they will face Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon.

Firmino has enjoyed a fine goalscoring season thus far for Liverpool, netting eight times in 19 appearances while also contributing four assists. He has outscored Richarlison, Antony, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli - who have all been included in Brazil's squad - in the Premier League so far this campaign.

The 31-year-old has had only one international call-up since playing in the Copa America defeat to Argentina in July last year. But Firmino spoke in September of his desire to feature in Qatar.

"I dream of being at the World Cup," he said. "I've always been a positive person. My first thought is to be there. I'll be anxious about it, hopeful of being called up as that's what I work hard towards and where I want to be."

With Diogo Jota out and doubts over whether England will call up Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, there is a possibility Liverpool could have only four representatives at the World Cup. It would be their lowest such number since the 1994 finals, when only Stig Inge Bjornebye took part with Norway.
