Roberto Firmino 'offered' new Liverpool contract

Liverpool have tabled a new contract offer for Roberto Firmino as negotiations between club and player intensify, according to Football Insider .

Firmino's current contract with the Reds runs out at the end of the season, with speculation that the forward may call time on a glittering eight year spell on Merseyside. Last summer saw the £64million arrival of Darwin Nunez from Benfica, with the 23-year-old seen as the obvious successor to lead Liverpool's line for years to come and Firmino expected to take on a less central role.

But an impressive start to the new season has led to calls for a new contract. Seven Premier League goals places him as the club's most prolific in the league this season, and a period of six goals in five games carried the club through a rough mid-season patch while Nunez was suspended and then re-introduced with caution.

The report states that Jurgen Klopp's side are keen to keep hold of the 31-year-old beyond the summer, and are set to negotiate a new deal. It adds that their current offer does reduce the Brazilian's salary below the reported £180,000-per-week he currently earns, although there will be opportunity to earn higher performance and goal-related bonuses.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed in November that talks over a new contract were underway, admitting that he intends to keep the forward in his plans past the end of the season. Asked about Firmino's contract situation, the Reds boss said: "Normal conversations [are] happening as well, so we will see what happens there."

Should a new deal not be signed by January, Firmino would hypothetically be able to enter a pre-contract agreement with any potential suitors. But his omission from the Brazil squad for the World Cup means he is among the Liverpool squad in Dubai and able to discuss a new deal.

The forward was spotted in training ahead of the club's Dubai Super Cup meetings with Lyon and AC Milan.
