Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has explained how Pep Guardiola inspired him to become a football manager.
De Zerbi's side went up against Manchester City on Wednesday evening, with Phil Foden and Julio Enciso scoring first-half goals in the eventual 1-1 draw. The Seagulls booked their place in next season's Europa League on the back of the point, with De Zerbi's stock as a coach continuing to rise.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk chief replaced Graham Potter back in September, with the style of football he has imposed at the Amex Stadium earning him plenty of plaudits. Guardiola, in the build-up to the midweek clash, sung De Zerbi's praises - hailing him as 'one of the most influential managers in the last 20 years'.

De Zerbi couldn't help but smile when asked about those comments, before explaining: "I became a coach for him. I don't know if it's a good thing, but I became a coach for him because I loved his Barcelona. I studied him a lot. I don't love to copy anyone and I didn't copy, but I took [things from him] when I started to be a coach. And before, also, when I finished as a player. Pep is still number one."
On the game, De Zerbi added: "It was very tough, but we knew that playing against City is always tough. I think we played very well, deserved a point and deserve to play Europa League. To defend man-to-man and play the ball in every situation - we didn't lose our style. To press Man City man-to-man on every side of the pitch, I think is courage."
It was Enciso's special first-half strike which denied City of all three points. The Paraguayan is one of several Brighton players hitting the headlines and sparking transfer speculation. Guardiola is said to be a 'huge admirer' of the player, but De Zerbi is keen to keep the 19-year-old and continue to help him progress.
"The goal was incredible but Julio has big, big potential," said De Zerbi. "I want him to play better, I want him to play for the team and I think he can improve. If he stays with us I think for sure, he can improve."
