Roberta Flack's last Instagram post before death paid tribute to 'wondrous' Celine Dion for song cover

Roberta Flack appeared to be feeling nostalgic in her final Instagram post.

The legendary singer died on Monday at the age of 88 in New York after suffering a heart attack.

Just three days before her passing, she took to the social media platform to praise fellow singer Celine Dion, 56, as she shared a video of her covering her song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

While Flack wasn’t the first to record the song, it held special meaning as it became a major international hit for her in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

She captioned the post: “I’m touched and thrilled to share this clip of the wondrous Celine Dion adding her luminous shine to “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Thank you Celine for your love! Xoxo R.”

The move was met by a wave of positive comments from fans, praising both ladies renditions of the emotional song - which was originally written in 1957 by British political singer-songwriter Ewan MacColl for his then lover Peggy Seeger.

The Killing Me Softly hit-maker’s publicist Elaine Schock confirmed her death in a statement, saying: “We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning on February 24 2025.

“She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.”

Roberta Flack’s representative confirmed her passing on Monday

Flack announced in 2022 that she was suffering from ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, an incurable neurological disease that causes muscle weakness and eventually paralysis.

Her condition “made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak," her management said in a statement at the time.

Her team added that it would “take a lot more than ALS to silence this icon," and said she had "plans to stay active in her musical and creative pursuits".

The diagnosis came after she suffered a stroke in 2016.
