Robert Snodgrass: Motherwell won't wait for ex-West Ham star

Motherwell boss Stevie Hammell has hinted that interest may have cooled on former West Ham and West Brom star Robert Snodgrass, and says there isn't an update either way.

And he says Tom Penney's loan move from Ipswich could be a worthy addition to his squad.

Hammell last week admitted he had spoken to Scotland internationalist Snodgrass about a move to Fir Park, as he is a free agent after turning down a new deal at Luton Town.

However, Hammell says he hasn't heard anything from the 34-year-old, and may need to look at other targets.

He said: "There is no update, I don't think, positive or otherwise. It's pretty much where it was last week, so there's nothing really to add to that, unfortunately.

"We've not put a deadline on it, as such, but we will be looking to bring players in, and we've not got an endless budget here where we can just sit.

"We will be looking to bring in a couple before Thursday.

"We'll try and recruit a couple of players. We'll be looking to do a little bit more business before the window closes, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

"We are looking at specific areas on the pitch but, similar to Matt, he needs to fit into what we're trying to do here, he needs to want to come, to be a part of this, and add to the group, progress the group, and if that's not the case then he won't come."

Left-back Penney, 24, was yesterday announced on a six-month loan deal from Ipswich, and Hammell is pleased with the signing, given that Jake Carroll is likely to be out for the rest of this season.

He said: "He is a great addition for us, I'm really happy to have him on board.

"He was someone we were fully aware of, he'll fit into the group and environment that we're trying to create here.

"He's keen to be here, which is massive for me, and I think he will be an excellent addition for us, going forward.

"He will train today and we will assess him after that. He has been training, he has been working, and he's a fit boy who is in good condition, so he will come right into my plans straight away."

Hammell says some of the younger players will go out on loan deals, but will still be available for 'B' team and reserve games.

Meanwhile, the Fir Park gaffer says he's looking for progression from his side when they travel to Kilmarnock tomorrow, with Derek McInnes' side searching for their first Premiership win.

He said: "It will be a tough game. They've had a tough start; on paper they've played a lot of the teams that finished high up in the league last season.

"They will be looking at this as a game they want a positive result from, same as us. We can't control what they're doing but we can control what we're doing.

"This week we've prepared really well, we'll iron a few things out and look at a little bit of detail about what we expect tomorrow.

"I expect a progression, for us to be getting better consistently. We want to keep progressing, we want to keep the competition strong within the group.

"Competition is there, but there's also competition in this building every day. That's the environment we're trying to create where during the week they're competing with each other to progress the team on a matchday.

"We need to make sure we're progressing from the performances that we've put in already.

"We're in a good place, in terms of the way we've started. The atmosphere within the group is really good, the competition and they've responded really well to the day-to-day challenges.

"We're feeling good about things."
