Robert Sanchez: Chelsea book medical as £25m fee agreed for Brighton goalkeeper

Chelsea have agreed a £25million fee to sign Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 25-year-old is expected to complete his medical before signing his long-term contract at Stamford Bridge this week.

The Spain international will come in to replace Edouard Mendy, who departed for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli in June.

Mauricio Pochettino is happy with Kepa as his No1 keeper but needs competition to keep standards high in his squad.

Graham Potter’s former goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts chose to remain after the former manager was sacked and is now heading up the department.

Roberts played a key role in signing Sanchez, who he worked with at Brighton, and he will now train under Pochettino’s new goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez.

Sanchez had been deemed surplus to requirements on the South Coast after losing his place to Jason Steele and after the signing of Bart Verbruggen this summer.

Chelsea continue to chase Moises Caicedo but Brighton are reluctant to sell their star midfielder for any less than £100million.

The Blues will, however, soon tie up a £38.6m deal for Monaco defender Axel Disasi following Wesley Fofana’s long-term knee injury.
