The Jets are searching for a veteran quarterback to help them win now. However, they still have hope for former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson.
Needless to say, things haven’t exactly gone the way Wilson and the Jets have hoped since the former BYU quarterback came into the league in 2021 and this is the biggest reason why the Jets are looking at Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr. Even owner Woody Johnson basically said he thinks the Jets are just a quarterback away from really competing.
All that said, head coach Robert Saleh has consistenly said he wants to keep working with and helping Wilson. General manager Joe Douglas echoed those sentiments during his Scouting Combine press conference Tuesday.
Saleh spoke to the media Thursday and said he wants to get Wilson “the best help he can get” as the team looks to continue trying to develop and salvage Wilson, noting that he’s unsure what the future holds not just for Wilson but for whichever veteran quarterback the Jets add.
When asked where Wilson would stand if the Jets acquire a veteran that would presumably be with the team for a few years, Saleh said: “You guys know me, it’s stay in the moment and try to do everything we can to help everyone get better, be the best version of themselves they can be, so whether we bring in a guy who’s in his early 30’s and you know he’s going to be here for a while, the focus is to just help him get better, as best as he can, and if his best gets to be showcased here as a New York Jet, awesome, if not, it’s still awesome because all we want is what’s best for him and his development, no different than any other player on our roster.”
“That’s our job to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to help them find ways to reach their max potential, as coaches, and then Joe and his staff, their job is to continue to push the envelope and finding players who can continue to maintain that standard. So, to answer your question, I don’t have it for two years from now, I don’t know what that means, I just know our focus is to try to help him get as best as he can.”
The Jets continue to say all the right things on Wilson but time will tell whether their actions back up those words.
