The New York Jets have vowed to commit to developing quarterback Zach Wilson “through hell or high water” heading into 2023 following a struggling 2022 season. They just haven’t yet committed to him as the starter heading into 2023.
In meeting with the media Monday during locker room clean-out day, head coach Robert Saleh wouldn’t commit yet to Wilson as the starter for the 2023 season but said he will give Wilson a chance to compete for the starting job.
Saleh also believes this upcoming season can be a big one for Wilson. “I do expect him to take a jump,” Saleh said, adding he expects a “tremendous amount of growth” in Wilson’s third year.
Saleh has previously said it would be beneficial for Wilson to get his mind right this offseason and he still believes that. “I will stand by what I’ve said, these next four months are about him and getting his mind right.”
The Jets have been speculated to be in the veteran quarterback market but Saleh wouldn’t comment on if the Jets need to add a veteran quarterback, saying that’s a question for general manager Joe Douglas.
The Jets have been saying all the right things lately about Wilson and want to give him every opportunity to succeed. We’ll see this offseason how committed they really are to Wilson and his development.
