Robert Pattinson surprises fans as he turns up at cinema for opening night of The Batman

Robert Pattinson thrilled fans when he made a surprise appearance at a showing of The Batman – in which he plays the caped crusader.

The 35-year-old British actor has been praised for his role in the superhero action film where he plays Bruce Wayne by day and Batman by night.

Fans have eagerly anticipated the new film as it was originally supposed to be released in June last year, but was delayed to this month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now that the film is out, fans have been flocking to cinemas to see the star in action – but some lucky film fans got far closer to the actor than they would have imagined.

Footage shared on social media has shown a packed cinema sitting to wait for the film to start – only for Robert to wander in through the door and take the stairs down to the front of the screening room.

Excited fans cannot believe their eyes and start shouting out in shock and surprise when they realise the former Twilight star is standing before them.

In footage shared via TikTok and Instagram, Rob is shown being handed a microphone and he then tells the audience how proud he is of the new film.

He is shown saying: “I love it and I hope you love it too.”

The audience then erupts into rapturous applause and screams and cheers of excitement while some also shouted “We love you” at the British actor.

After the hysterical screaming dies down, Rob is shown then saying: “Let’s make a sequel” – prompting further deafening cheers.

The new film sees Rob in the role as Batman befriending Catwoman, played by Zoe Kravitz, and having to take on both the Riddler, played by Paul Dano, and the Penguin, played by Colin Farrell.

The film has already made over £200 million at the box office after just four days of release.

And while the film has been generally praised by critics, some have argued the almost three hour running time makes it something of an endurance test.

Rob might be glad the film is finally out as it sounds like he went through hell to keep in shape for the part – explaining he even monitored how much water he drank as he strove to look good for the cameras.

He told People at one premiere earlier this month: "You just cut down and cut down and cut down before the couple of scenes with your shirt off, and you're counting sips of water.

"Shame is my biggest motivator, 100%."

He also explained that he was panicking about playing the iconic role until he slipped into the costume.

Rob recalled: "It's funny because you read the script and you spend loads of time trying to figure out, 'How can I play this character who does these sort of audacious acts?'

“And the closer I got to the shoot I got more and more paranoid – you know, it feels ridiculous when you're just sitting at home in a t-shirt – and then you put it on. It's got an elemental power to it."
