Robert Downey Jr's emotional new Netflix drama about late father set for release next month

How much do you really know about Hollywood icon Robert Downey Jr?

Well you're about to delve deep thanks to a new, thought-provoking drama on Netflix.

Netflix's Sr. offers a fascinating peek behind Iron Man's mask - but the real Marvel here is actually Robert's late father.

Out next month, Sr. examines the older Robert Downey's career as a boundary-pushing filmmaker, including his decision to pursue one final film, as well as his life and relationship with his son.

The trailer features Jr. quizzing his dad about a huge range of topics - despite Sr.'s charming lack of interest.

To the strains of the moving Father & Son by Yusuf/Cat Stevens, there's a real poignancy here as we see the elder actor struggle with old age and Parkinson's.

Shot over three years, the film packs a lot in, and is quite the emotional journey.

Downey Jr. shared the project in a recent Instagram post, saying: "(My father) was a groundbreaking filmmaker. As well as my dad. It's not uncomplicated … Sr. is a documentary that tells the story of Robert Downey's maverick rise in NYC, his crash, burn and redemption in Hollywood and our relationship in the aftermath."

Who was Robert Downey Sr?

He was an American filmmaker and actor, perhaps best known for writing and directing the underground film Putney Swope , a satire on the New York Madison Avenue advertising world.

Film scholar Wheeler Winston Dixon described Downey's 60s films as 'strictly take-no-prisoners affairs, with minimal budgets and outrageous satire, effectively pushing forward the countercultural agenda of the day'.

Sadly, Robert Downey Sr. died of complications from Parkinson's disease in his sleep at his home in Manhattan, on July 7, 2021 - just 13 days after his 85th birthday.

What next for Iron Man?

Downey Jr. has several projects in the pipeline, including the Tony Stark-esque Discovery+ series Downey's Dream Cars, which follows the actor and a team of experts restoring classic cars in an environmentally-friendly way.

Elsewhere he's going to appear in Christopher Nolan's eagerly-awaited Oppenheimer - the man behind the first atom bomb during the Second World War.

And that's not all, for there's still the prospect of a third Sherlock Holmes film alongside Jude Law, with presumably Guy Ritchie or Dexter Fletcher directing.

Sr. will be released on Netflix on December 2.
