Alex Jones has opened up about one of the most awkward interviews she’s faced on The One Show — and it involved none other than Hollywood legend Robert De Niro. Speaking on Alan Carr’s Life’s A Beach podcast, Alex recalled how the double Oscar-winner left her completely speechless with his painfully short and uncooperative responses during a chat that was anything but smooth.
De Niro had joined the show to promote his Netflix series Zero Day and his upcoming film The Alto Knights, where he takes on a rare double role. But instead of a lively chat, Alex got what she described as “unbelievable” replies — or rather, a lack of them, reported Wales Online.
Sitting next to 15-year-old rising star Owen Cooper, De Niro remained tight-lipped. Alex tried to draw him out with a thoughtful question, asking: “Look, Robert, there’s somebody here at the beginning of his career, what advice would you have?” His answer? Nothing. “He couldn’t think of anything,” she said, still baffled by his silence. “Do you think he could think of anything? No. Nothing.”
Alan Carr chimed in with his own story, recalling how De Niro had also made things difficult when he was a guest on The Graham Norton Show. Alan joked that he’d renamed him “Robert De No-No” after the actor offered the shortest possible answers to every question thrown his way.
Even when Graham Norton asked whether he enjoyed playing a former US president in Zero Day, De Niro’s answer was a blunt “No.” And when asked if he had any words of encouragement for Anora star Mikey Madison ahead of her first Oscars? Another deadpan “No.”
But it wasn’t all cold shoulders and icy stares. After the cameras had stopped rolling, Alex said De Niro suddenly softened. “I said, ‘Are you all right, Robert?’ and he said, ‘Call me Rob,’” she revealed. “So I said ‘All right then, Rob,’ and he said, ‘I just get very nervous on live television.’”
It turns out the acting legend, who’s delivered powerful performances in films like Raging Bull and The Godfather II, simply struggles with live TV interviews — something most wouldn’t expect from such a seasoned star. Alex reflected on the surprising moment, adding: “You can’t be good at everything.”
