Robbie Neilson sets Lawrence Shankland lofty Hearts goal target amid 'flattered' derby victory claim

Robbie Neilson hailed talisman Lawrence Shankland after the striker's 20th goal in all competitions this season helped Hearts secure a 3-0 win against city rivals Hibernian at Easter Road to reach the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

The Jambos were happy to play on the counter attack in the fiery encounter in Leith, but provided a masterclass in finishing scoring with their three clear cut chances of the game. Josh Ginnelly opened the scoring with a powerful finish from inside the area, before Shankland doubled their advantage with a fine half volley from outside the area.

The striker was then sent off for a second bookable offence, but defender Toby Sibbick decided to charge forward from the back, racing onto a pass before dinking a delightful effort over David Marshall to cap off an excellent afternoon's work for the visitors.

Hearts boss Neilson, who watched the game from the stands as he continues to serve a suspension, admitted the score line was a bit harsh on Hibs, but hailed the impact of his substitutes in determining the outcome of the game in the second half. Speaking on BBC Sportsound after the match, he said: "The 3-0 probably flattered us. It's quite scrappy, it's hard to get control. Ultimately, we got the goals at the right time and we've managed to progress into the next round.

"You have to sometimes ride your luck. I thought we did enough to win the game. The level of the team is actually going up as we bring subs on, which is what we need to do.

Ginnelly's goal was his fourth in his last nine appearances, and Neilson is hoping to tie the winger down beyond the expiry of his contract next summer. He added: "Josh Ginnelly's contract's up so it's something we're going to speak about.

"We'll definitely have a chat with Josh and get things tied up if we can. You're starting to see a real top player come through."

The Jambos boss then heaped praise on striker Shankland, who he believes will keep adding to his goal tally this season, and also has some positive word for Sibbick, following his inspired display.

"Lawrence Shankland's been outstanding, absolutely outstanding", he added. "The first person that texted me today after the game was John Robertson to ask for Lawrence's number to give him a wee call. I knew bringing Lawrence in here he would score goals because we create chances. Can he get to 30?

"Toby Sibbick is a great boy. Over the last month, he's really, really kicked on and he's got that sharpness about him that he needs."
