Robbie Fowler blasts Everton for not signing Newcastle United goalscorer

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has hit out at Merseyside rivals Everton for not signing Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson back in the summer of 2020.

Wilson joined the Magpies from relegated Bournemouth in a deal worth around £20million and has consistently scored goals for United, no matter where they've found themselves in the Premier League table.

The 31-year-old scored 18 goals this term - the highest tally of any Newcastle United player since Alan Shearer's retirement - and regained his place in the England squad as a result.

Under Eddie Howe, Wilson is one of a number of existing Newcastle players who have improved massively to remain an integral part of their success after the club's takeover in 2021, and helped the Magpies qualify for next season's Champions League as well as reaching their first cup final for 24 years this season.

And with Everton narrowly avoiding Premier League relegation for the second successive season, Fowler feels it is a damning indictment of their recent recruitment that they didn't strike a deal for Wilson when they had the chance to.

“Look through the team, and yes, they’ve spent money, they’ve signed a couple of players that maybe wouldn’t be there but for the Saudi takeover,” Fowler wrote in his column for The Mirror.

“But look at Callum Wilson, for instance. He was available to all the Premier League teams when Bournemouth went down in 2020. Plenty could have taken him…and plenty now wish they did (and yeah, I’m looking at you Everton).”
