Rob McElhenney in emotional message to Wrexham fans as stadium destruction begins

Wrexham AFC's ground has officially begun its redevelopment with its Kop Stand being knocked down.

Owner Rob McElhenney shared an image of the Kop after being bulldozed, with plans to raise the stadium's capacity to 15,500 - and to finally use the stand that has been dormant since 2008.

Alongside Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, the two purchased ownership of the club in 2021, with plans to guide them out of the National League and turn them into a sustainable EFL club.

The two co-owners have quickly come much-loved figures in north Wales, and have seemingly been spending more time in Wrexham this season, with McElhenney in particular being seen at a handful of games after making regular trips from his home in Philadelphia.

And they have given Wrexham fans another reason to be happy and optimistic about the club's future, after following through with their promise to develop the stadium, which they were able to purchase from Glyndwr University in June 2022.

Posting the image of the work beginning, McElhenney wrote: "Goodbye old girl. You will not be forgotten. Hopefully that’s promotion at the end of your rainbow."

Wrexham Council's planning committee gave the green light to the club's proposals for a replacement for the unused terraced stand in November, which would raise the capacity by 5,000.

The ground had previously held 20,000, with as many as 10,000 being able to stand in the section, but has been unused since 2008 on safety grounds.

Wrexham's 2021/22 season was documented on the Disney+ show Welcome to Wrexham, which followed their first full campaign under the new owners as they came so close to making the playoff final, but fell to Grimsby Town, who would go on to gain promotion at Wembley Stadium.

During the show, McElhenney and Reynolds would clearly fall in love for the club as the season progressed, showing their devastation when the team lost at Wembley to Bromley in the FA Trophy Final, as well as their disappointment at not being promoted - vowing to the fans that they would come back and go one better this season.

This season is also being documented by Disney+, and will be shown at the end of the campaign.
