Managing director is the first of a number of jobs the ECB are looking to fill after their post-Ashes clear out. Ashley Giles was fired as MD last month.
Andrew Strauss, who held the role until 2018, when he had to stand down for personal reasons, is leading the recruitment, and Key is among the left-field choices the ECB have explored.
Key, a Sky Sports pundit and Standard Sport columnist, is well respected in the game after a long career with Kent, as well as winning 15 Test caps for England.
Other strong candidates for the managing director job include Marcus North, the Durham director of cricket, and Ed Smith, the national selector who was fired last year.
