It is tradition that a bridal look closes a collection, and as a wedding season to end them all fast approaches, the top houses each gave their spin on the all-white frock.
Chanel said stay classic. Creative director Virginie Viard’s final look, a square cut silk slip with crystal embroidered straps, was dressed up with a white floral head band, ribbons trickling down the shoulders, and navy blue Chanel camellias. It had a flapper girl, loose-fit silhouette that cropped up multiple times this season. Alexandre Vauthier’s take on Twenties glamour was the most exciting, though; all flouncing and art deco embellishments. Serious first dance attire.
From the Roaring Twenties to the future, at Jean Paul Gaultier conceptual designer Glenn Martens did a modern twist on marriage. Think transparent mesh, skin tight gown with sculptural veil overhead. “For me, couture means pure beauty and elegance,” Martens, who guest designed for one season, says. “Looks that have no business being on the street.” Not for the pavement. Perfect for the aisle.
Are you really wanting to standout? Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino did risqué cut outs for anyone wanting to turn heads in pews. And the most playful take came from Viktor&Rolf, who presented a high necked collection brimming with wit. With their huge tulle skirt and wing-like sleeves serving high drama, the design duo asked a simple question: why not go large on the Big Day? Who are we to disagree.
