Roadworks congestion for Nottinghamshire village 'always a problem getting out of'

Villagers have shared their concerns after congestion built up due to roadworks in the area. On Monday, July 3, there were queues of traffic in both directions at Gunthorpe Bridge on the A6097 due to roadworks.

In addition to these works, there are also roadworks taking place on Main Street in Burton Joyce, and on the A612 on Nottingham Road, which connects to the A6097 Bridgford Street. Due to the number of roadworks close to Gunthorpe, many residents have experienced delays or are having to take alternate routes.

However, the riverside village can only be accessed by car at two points, both of which are on the A6097. According to traffic monitoring site Inrix at around 2pm on July 3: "Slow traffic on A6097 Bridgford Street in both directions at Gunthorpe Bridge.

"In the roadworks area. Temporary traffic lights in operation." Residents in the area have shared their concerns about the roadworks in the area, but explained it can help them safely get in and out of their village.

Retired Jean Julyan, 75, of Gunthorpe said: "We went to Carlton this morning and we passed the roadworks down here near the roundabout and here, there were roadworks on the bridge. It's always a problem getting out of Gunthorpe as the road is quite fast and it's difficult to get out at the best of times.

"The only thing about the queueing is the nice drivers let you out. I've sat at the top for ages before.

"There's no where you can get to Gunthorpe other than the A6097, even if you went right round through Radcliffe you still have to go on the A6097." Speaking of the roadworks, civil engineer, Phil Hooley, 51, explained from previous experiences it could mean getting stuck for an hour during peak times.

He said: "It's going to be terrible." Speaking about going into Nottingham, Phil explained it can already be "difficult" turning onto the road, and to get to Nottingham there is not many options.

He explained: "You can't divert any where because it's the only way out unless you go round to Lady Bay Bridge." Retired Alan Tivey says he is being impacted by the Burton Joyce roadworks as he regularly goes that way.

The 68 year old explained: "My mum lives in Gedling and I go there about three times a week, so I will have to drive through it. It's chaos."

He explained that avoiding the roadworks takes him an additional 15 minutes each way, and if he visits three times a week this adds up to an extra hour and half of driving.

Speaking about getting on to the A6097, Alan said: "When we have roadworks it makes it easier to get out of here as the traffic is slower. It can be horrendous."

In regards to the roadworks near the roundabout, a retired 66 year old woman who did not wish to be named said: "If they had waited a fortnight it would be better as it's the kids holidays. It's going to cause some congestion problems.

"If I go into town I'm going to have to the other way probably. I can go to West Bridgford and Lady Bay Bridge, but it's still a long way.

"It can be an extra 20 to 30 minutes."
