Roads flooded as Merseyside hit by torrential rain

Flooding has caused some traffic problems across Merseyside today as rain battered the region.

Roads have become waterlogged and flood alerts have been issued with areas by the River Alt, including Formby to Huyton, being particularly affected. A yellow rain warning is also in place, as downpours have been nonstop for most of the morning on Tuesday, January 10.

With periods of heavy rain expected over the next few days, some flooding conditions could get worse. Some levels in watercourses are already high and the ground saturated, in places from from Huyton to Hightown including, Kirkby, Fazakerley, Maghull, Formby, Aughton, Sefton and Lunt.

Images captured by the ECHO show that many areas in Wirral, including Wallasey Bridge Road and Rendel Street, in Birkenhead, are flooded. Highlighting what people can expect, the Met Office reports: "Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer, spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer and some interruption to power supplies and other services possible."

North West motorway police issued a warning, tweeting: "Morning folks, there is a yellow weather warning for rain across most of the region today. Please allow extra time for any journeys and drive to the conditions."

While National Highways echoed the statement, they said: "Take care if you're on the road today, it's wet out there and driving conditions could be tricky."
