Road 'turned into bog' as Nottinghamshire village residents frustrated at delayed water works

Frustrated residents in a Nottinghamshire village have compared their road to a bog after water work repairs were delayed. People living in Massey Close, Burton Joyce said water had been spurting out on the A612 near its junction for more than a week.

Severn Trent Water was supposed to carry out a valve renewal on Tuesday, May 17, but were unable to start due to delay. However, signage was still in place during the morning, with one commuter reporting a one and a half hour wait to Nottinghamshire Live due to the temporary traffic lights.

Barbara Bellamy and George Blatherwick, who live in Massey Close said: "We went to Nottingham on the bus the other day, the grass was like a bog. At night you can hear children playing in it, so they are enjoying it." The retired couple said equipment and repair vehicles had been parked up on the close before unexpectedly leaving.

"All that was for nothing," said Mr Blatherwick, before Ms Bellamy added: "You see these advertisements about saving water but that's been like that for a whole week." Severn Trent apologised for the delay and said teams were scheduled to sort the issue at 7pm.

Ray Singleton, who also lives nearby, said he "couldn't understand" why the traffic management was set up without any work taking place. "There seems to be no control from the people working on it, it's casual. I thought there was no need for a car wash when I went out the other day."

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by our scheduled valve renewal work on the junction of the A612 and Massey Close. Traffic management was set up last night, ready for work to begin this morning, but we were unfortunately hit with a delay in being able to start, so the three-way lights were taken down earlier today.

“We have teams scheduled to go out to the site at 7pm this evening, when two-way traffic lights will be in operation so we can ensure the traffic can flow easier. Again, we're really sorry for the disruption caused and we’ll aim to get this essential work finished as soon as possible.”
