'Road rage' driver ran over man delivering washing machine after he was blocked by his lorry

A delivery driver was struck by a Mercedes blocked by his lorry as he delivered a washing machine. Mark Roberts, 48, was visibly injured after he was hit by driver David Lewis, 62, who then sped away.

CCTV footage showed Mr Roberts getting out of the lorry and walking towards Lewis's car. But the silver Mercedes then pulled out into the road and struck the grandfather who lay motionless on the floor.

The dangerous driver appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday at a sentencing hearing which heard the defendant became enraged after being made to wait as the victim delivered a dishwasher. His behaviour was described as "road rage" by prosecutor Nuhu Gobir, when he ran over Mr Roberts in Lewis Street, Aberbargoed, Caerphilly.

The victim was taken to hospital where he received treatment for swelling to his elbow and minor injuries to his elbow and wrist. Lewis denied a charge of dangerous driving but was found guilty by a jury following a trial.

Lewis, of Penylan Road, Argoed, was found not guilty of assault, claiming he didn't intend to hit Mr Roberts with his vehicle. Judge Shomon Khan described both the defendant's and victim's actions as "like children".

The defendant was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for 12 months. He was also disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay £750 in courts costs and carry out 160 hours unpaid work.
