Road in Easton set to be taken over by theatre and street parties this summer

A road in Easton is set to be celebrated this summer with a series of cultural and community events kicking off at the end of May. Expect live music, street parties and promenade performances along Stapleton Road this summer.

Each month the road will host a community day where members of the public will be invited to join businesses and community groups. Alongside the community days organised by Eastside Community Trust and Bristol Horn Youth Concern there will be outdoor theatre performances in June.

Compass Presents will guide people along the road in a musical theatre performance entitled Around The World in BS5. The interactive performances will take place every Sunday in June in an interactive performance and celebration of Bristol’s 'most diverse street'.

Stapleton Road is one of the high streets in Bristol benefiting from £4.725 million funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority’s Love Our High Streets project. The funding will be used for improvements in nine high streets in Bristol and the city centre alongside events aimed at increasing footfall.

Becky Whitmore, project lead for the Welcome to Stapleton Road, said: “We will be linking up with the M32 Flea Market and we’ll have our community hub under the railway arches by the painted pillars. There will be music, arts and crafts, children’s activities and a chance to sample food from local businesses.

“The idea is to encourage people to find out more about the local businesses here who come from all over the world. We are partnering with BHYC, which has been doing outreach work on Stapleton Road for years and is working with local musicians who will perform on the day.”

Welcome to Stapleton Road is a series of three community days on May 27 , June 24 and July 27. Each month a different section of the road will be celebrated with local businesses coming out onto the street and the celebration moving further towards Bristol city centre each month.

Around the World in BS5 is a ticketed event taking place each Sunday in June. More information and tickets can be found on Headfirst. More details on the first community day can be found on the Facebook event page and further information on the wider high street recovery programme can be found on the Bristol City Council website.
