Road closed after 'car smashes into bus stop'

A cordon is in place tonight after a car 'ploughed into a bus stop' in Heywood. It happened on Argyle Street in the town shortly after 7pm this time.

Eyewitnesses said a silver coloured Saab smashed into a bus stop near the Bungalow convenience store, at the junction with Unity Street.

Emergency services attended and the road has been taped off by police. At this stage it is not clear if anyone has been injured.

A Saab with extensive damage to its side and front end could be seen inside the cordon. One onlooker said it was 'in bad shape.'

The glass at the bus stop had also shattered and been strewn across the road and the sign knocked to the ground as officers carried out enquiries.

In the last hour a recovery truck has arrived in order to take the car away. The road remains closed and locals are being advised to find alternative routes.
