Riverdale actor, 24, handed life sentence for killing his mother

A well-known Canadian actor has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his mother, Barbara Waite, back in 2020.

Ryan Grantham, who played Jeffrey Augustine on the fourth season of Riverdale, was sentenced at British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver on Wednesday, September 21.

Grantham pled guilty to second-degree murder, however, he was initially charged with first-degree murder and was told he would have no eligibility for parole for the first 14 years of his sentence.

Grantham admitted to police on April 1, 2020, that he had shot his mother in the back of the head.

Since then, he has remained in custody and according to Deadline, has been participating in a mental health program as he prepares to be transferred to another facility to live out his sentence.

According to court reports, Grantham had filmed a video of his mother’s body and confessed to the killing on camera before he wrote about plans to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and to commit a mass shooting at Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University or on Lions Gate Bridge.

He packed his car with three guns, ammunition, and 12 Molotov cocktails, according to Canadian police, and made his way to the town of Hope before turning around and driving to a Vancouver police station.

After arriving there, Grantham allegedly told an officer, “I killed my mother.”

Grantham was a former child actor and had a role in the 2010 movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as well as minor roles in Supernatural, iZombie, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Back in March when facing a court of law, Grantham said:“In the face of something so horrible, saying sorry seems so pointless.

“But from every fiber of my being, I am sorry.”
