River Ely freezes over in Cardiff Bay as cold snap hits

The River Ely froze over in Cardiff Marina as Wales experienced its coldest night in over a decade. Temperatures dropped to a low of -12°C in Wales on Wednesday night making it the coldest night since December 2010.

The temperature in Cardiff dropped to a low of -4°C in the early hours of Thursday morning. The Ely River in Cardiff Marina was frozen over, as captured by Gavin Brown. The boats in the marina could be seen surrounded by frozen water at sunrise.

The temperatures have hit such a low that train services on the Valley Lines have been suspended as a result of the cold weather affecting signals in the area. Transport for Wales has said that services on the Cardiff Valley Lines are currently suspended, with disruption expected to continue into Thursday afternoon.

Temperatures in Wales could drop to a low of -8°C tonight with a "hard frost" expected. An Ebbw Vale secondary school has also warned pupils not to play on frozen lakes after reports of pupils playing on a frozen pond in Cwmcelyn.

Brynmawr Foundation School released a statement warning pupils pf the dangers of playing on frozen surfaces. The warning from the school follows the confirmation that four children have died after falling into a frozen lake in Solihull on Sunday.
