River City star recollects first ever line as she makes return to show on 20 year anniversary

A River City star has reminisced back to her original days on the set of the popular Scottish soap, as she returns to Shieldinch in time for the 20 year anniversary.

Joyce Falconer, who plays Roisin McIntyre in the long-running Scottish television show, spoke to Glasgow Live earlier this week about the happiness she feels being back on the cobbled streets of Shieldinch. The actress also fondly remembers her first ever lines on the programme, and her unique love affair with another long-standing cast member.

Speaking to Glasgow Live, Joyce said: "I actually prefer working on this set, I even remember the first time I saw the streets of Shieldinch. You could've been in Partick or Dennistoun or anywhere, it was so authentic.

"I actually had to do a double take and stop for a minute, and remind myself it was a set as it looked so real. The scenic artists were still finishing off little things at that point, adding aging to the stone and painting on the graffiti and stuff.

"I still remember my first line - it was 'You've got a face that would turn the milk' - and that was said to Raymond at the time, when I worked in the sunbed shop, that is now Molly's Corner."

Joyce also spoke about working with Stephen Purdon, who plays Bob O'Hara, and the close bond they have developed while working together on River City.

The star continued: "There's always been a repore with Stephen, away back in the early days he used to come noise me up as a wee boy in the sunbed shop - and now we've got a wee romance on the go!

"He's my wee toy boy for now, but he was actually the person who gave me away at my on-screen wedding - things have changed in Shieldinch!

"I hope this programme lasts for a long, long time, but I don't know where I'll be in the next 20 or so years!"

You can watch Joyce play the lovable Roisin in the 20th anniversary episode of River City, airing on Monday, September 26 at 10pm on BBC Scotland.
