River City's Stephen Purdon leads tributes to young colleague after sudden death

River City star Stephen Purdon has led tributes to a young colleague after his sudden death. Purdon - who plays Bob O'Hara in the BBC Scotland soap - said he was 'gutted' when he heard the news of Michael Beaton's passing.

Dad-of-one Michael, from Glasgow, worked as a freelance electrician on a number of BBC shows including River City. Taking to Twitter, Stephen said: "Absolute tragic news this, Michael was a top lad. Gutted."

Michael was a huge Celtic fan and fans erupted into a round of applause in tribute to him during the 28th minute of their 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk at Parkhead on Tuesday night.

Loved ones also released green, white and orange balloons and let off fireworks in his memory at a local park on what would have been his 28th birthday last Thursday.

Joseph McLean, a producer on River City, said: "Tragic news about our spark Michael Beaton."

In a statement, show bosses said: "We were very saddened to hear about the passing of Michael so early in his career.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."
