Rising Homelessness Crisis in Los Angeles Despite Increased Spending

75,000 people were homeless in Los Angeles

The homelessness crisis in Los Angeles shows no signs of improvement as the city continues to grapple with the issue. Despite allocating a substantial budget of $1.3 billion for 2023 to address homelessness, the number of individuals living without shelter in the city has reached a staggering 75,000. Many of these displaced residents rely on charities like Bare Truth, founded by Joe Bradford, to fulfill their basic necessities.

Critics argue that although funds are being allocated, the root of the problem lies in the lack of communication with those directly affected. Decisions are being made for individuals without truly understanding their needs and circumstances. As the 2024 homeless count continues over three nights this week, it is widely anticipated that the numbers will once again reveal an increase in homelessness.

While Mayor Karen Bass maintains that progress is being made, experts view the situation from a different perspective. Although homeless encampments on the wealthier west side of the city have been cleared, some argue that this approach merely displaces individuals or becomes a game of 'whack-a-mole.' A prime example cited is Houston, where homelessness was reduced by 60% through the construction of affordable housing. However, California's environmental protection laws create significant hurdles for developers, making it more difficult to replicate the success seen in Texas.

Critics argue that the failure to effectively address homelessness in California is a reflection of liberal policies that need to be reassessed. Professor Armour highlights the need for a hard look in the mirror, acknowledging that short-term solutions and endless provision of services may end up costing even more in the long run.

According to the nonprofit Corporation for Supportive Housing, genuinely solving California's homelessness crisis could require an annual expenditure of $8 billion over a decade. This staggering amount emphasizes the gravity of the situation. However, it is crucial to invest in long-term solutions rather than relying solely on temporary interventions.

The homelessness crisis in Los Angeles is undeniably a complex issue with no easy answers. While funds have been earmarked and efforts are being made, some argue that a more comprehensive and sustainable approach is required. Building affordable housing and addressing the underlying causes of homelessness are critical steps towards finding a lasting solution. Only by truly understanding the needs and experiences of those affected can meaningful progress be achieved in tackling this pressing issue.
