Rishi Sunak is already 4/1 to leave job as PM - and be replaced by Boris Johnson

Rishi Sunak is already 4/1 to leave his role as Prime Minister next year - despite not officially taking it on yet. Although Mr Sunak was elected as Conservative Party leader on Monday, he has not yet taken over from Liz Truss as Prime Minister.

The formalities of the handover have not yet been confirmed, with Ms Truss having to go to see the King to tender her resignation before Mr Sunak does the same and is asked to form a government. It is possible that will happen on Tuesday.

That hasn't stopped the bookies doing their thing, though, and Betfair Exchange already has Mr Sunak at a fairly short 4/1 to leave the job in 2023. Let's not forget that 2023 is only a little over two months away.

He is at least tipped to make until the New Year, with longer odds of 14/1 to leave before January. The bookmaker has 2024 as the most likely year for his departure, at 6/5.

And - would you believe it - former PM Boris Johnson, who ruled out a return to the job he was ousted from a matter of months ago on Sunday night, is the early 9/4 favourite to replace Mr Sunak when he does go.

Penny Mordaunt, who pulled out of the leadership race on Monday afternoon, leaving Mr Sunak as the sole remaining candidate, is 4/1. Current chancellor Jeremy Hunt is priced at 13/2.

Betfair Exchange: Rishi Sunak exit date

2022: 14/1

2023: 4/1

2024: 6/5

2025 or later: 11/8

Betfair Exchange: Next permanent Conservative leader after Rishi Sunak

Boris Johnson: 9/4

Penny Mordaunt: 4/1

Jeremy Hunt: 13/2

Suella Braverman: 17/2

Ben Wallace, Kemi Badenoch: 10/1

Nadhim Zahawi: 11/1

Sajid Javid: 12/1

Brandon Lewis: 14/1

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Rishi Sunak is the third Tory member to be Prime Minister in the past three months, so it wouldn't be surprising to see yet another quick exit from the position. The former chancellor is 14/1 to leave his role before January, while he is 4/1 to go in 2023. Meanwhile, 2024 remains the most likely year he will depart, which is 6/5.

“Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who pulled out of the most recent leadership race, is the early 9/4 favourite to be the next Tory leader, with Penny Mordaunt 4/1 and Jeremy Hunt 13/2.”
