Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss to face off in vote of Tory members to decide the new Prime Minister

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss will battle it out over the next six weeks in a Tory party election campaign that will decide who the next Prime Minister will be.

The Former chancellor and the Foreign Secretary secured the two top slots after a fifth round of voting by Conservative MPs which saw Penny Mordaunt drop out.

Rishi Sunak scored 137 votes , up from 118 on Tuesday. Liz Truss was on 113, overtaking Penny Mordaunt who ended up on 105 votes, leaving just eight votes in it. There were two spoiled ballots.

Truss and Sunak's names will go before party members who will decide the new leader, with hustings to be held around the country from Friday 22 July.

The first hustings are expected in the north of England within days as the candidates complete a geographical circuit of the UK.

The BBC is hosting the first TV debate between the pair on Monday 25th July at 9pm.

The winner will be announced on 5th September after a postal ballot, completed by around 160,000 Tory party members.
