Viewers have had their first watch of the new Channel 4 reality show that's been dubbed “the new Traitors” by fans of the BBC smash hit. Rise and Fall sees Greg James hosting while 16 people compete to win up to £100,000.
With the same producers as the Claudia Winkleman-fronted BBC One game show, Rise and Fall has 16 contestants split into two teams - 'Grafters' and 'Rulers'. And with opportunities for everyone to rise and fall, players can go from having everything to having nothing.
The conceit even stretches to the digs contestants are expected to stay in. The Rulers are in swanky penthouses while the Grafters are in darkened cellar spaces.
And that's sort of what viewers are perturbed about: it's just a bit too real.
Mathew Hulbert @MathewHulbert spotted this early, saying: "In this country we're obsessed by who is upstairs and downstairs. #RiseAndFall #C4 #Channel4"
Chizzey @Chizzy227 was a bit more forthright, tweeting: "So basically The Tories sh**ting on everyone else !!!! #riseandfall"
Fearing for the future, Ian Eccles @Spinkzilla tweeted: "Reckon Rishi is watching #riseandfall & taking notes!"
The reflection of modern Britain was too much for Kerry Hudson @ThatKerryHudson, who tweeted: "'Only a ruler can win this money' - the absolute meta state of watching #riseandfall in Britain 2023."
Stewart McGill @shut_up_stewart has his own dream of how it will all end, tweeting: "Presumably the workers in the basement are going to overthrow the rulers in the last episode? #riseandfall"
