A road was closed for hours on Saturday as witnesses reported police with "riot shields" going down an alleyway.
Merseyside Police confirmed they were called to Shakespeare Street in Southport at around 3pm on February 25. Officers flooded the street as a large cordon was put in place into the evening.
One witness told the ECHO at around 7pm: "They’ve been here about two hours, around 15 police officers went down the alleyway but they’ve not come back out. There were sniffer dogs and two officers had riot shields.”

At the height of the incident, more than seven police cars could be seen inside the cordon, along with paramedics. Later in the evening, the cordon was scaled down, allowing cars to pass along Shakespeare Street, with a row of shops remaining under the cordon.
A worker in a takeaway close to the scene said he was "shocked" to see police descend on the street as he had not heard any commotion throughout the day. Police urged people to avoid the area while they dealt with the incident.
It was later confirmed police were attending an address to arrest a man following a breach of a non-molestation order, with the cordon being set up while they dealt with the man inside the address.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that emergency services are on Shakespeare Street in Southport this afternoon (Saturday 25 February).
"At around 3pm officers attended an address on Shakespeare Street to arrest a male following a breach of a non-molestation order.
"A scene is in place in the area as a precaution whilst officers engage with the male inside the house and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
"Thanks to all members of the public for their patience while this matter is being dealt with."
