Riot police called after man on roof hurls tiles and bricks onto cars

Police in riot gear were drafted in and roads were closed off after a man stood on a roof began to hurl tiles and brick down onto cars below.

Paul Rutledge, 31, pleaded guilty to six counts of criminal damage after the rampage in the early hours and faces a sentencing hearing in court next month.

Footage taken by a bystander and posted on Facebook appears to show a figure throwing tiles from the rooftops of a row of terraced houses on Frederick Street in Widnes, Cheshire.

Police with riot shields can be seen in various locations. A number of streets in the vicinity were cordoned off during the incident last Tuesday, March 21, police confirmed.

At Warrington Combined Court on Wednesday, March 22, in addition to the six counts of criminal damage, Rutledge indicated guilty pleas to a further count of criminal damage - relating to a roof and chimney, harassment in breach of a restraining order and using racially or religiously aggravated threatening words or behaviour, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The criminal damage guilty pleas related to damage to two roofs, unspecified 'property', and a Ford Fiesta, Peugeot and Mercedes, all belonging to various victims, the court heard.

Rutledge was remanded in custody to be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on April 19, with a videolink appearance recommended.

Police confirmed last week that Rutledge was throwing down tiles and bricks. A court document said Rutledge’s rooftop rampage occurred while he was subject to a community order.

In a statement issued last Tuesday, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 3.40am on Tuesday, March 21, police were called to Frederick Street, Widnes following reports of a man on the roof of a property.

"Emergency services attended the scene and a 31-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of affray, criminal damage and harassment; he remains in custody at this time. A number of roads were closed while officers dealt with the incident."
