Rio Ferdinand tells Manchester United who they should sign out of Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has suggested that the Reds will become title contenders if they sign either Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen this summer.

Erik ten Hag's side have been impressive in recent months and are the only side in England still competing on four fronts. The Reds currently sit third in the Premier League table and face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday afternoon.

However, while Marcus Rashford has been in scintillating form - registering 24 goals and nine assists in 36 appearances - United's other forwards have struggled for goals this term. French striker Anthony Martial has scored just six goals, while loan attacker Wout Weghorst has only found the back of the net on one occasion.

United spent over £200m last summer, strengthening at centre-back, central midfield and on the wing. Despite this, the club are expected to spend big on a new striker at the end of the season. The Reds have a long-term interest in England skipper Kane, while Ten Hag is also an admirer of Napoli ace Osimhen.

With Kane being the much older player at 29, Ferdinand favours a move for the Nigeria international, given that he would have a greater resale value at 24 years old.

"I think if I was talking about investing and looking after my money, I’d probably go for Osimhen," Ferdinand told BT Sport. There’s resale value with his age at 24 years old. It’s gonna be a huge outlay."

However, the Reds legend did admit that he would be happy with either frontman arriving at Old Trafford, suggesting that they can transform Ten Hag's side into title challengers.

He added: "I’d take either. I’ve got be honest with you, if Manchester United add either of those two players you mentioned to their roster they become title contenders. On form he’s [Osimhen] flying. You’ve got Rashford and him who are absolutely flying in terms of form. But when you talks about the best players in the world, the Mbappes of this world are still levels above."

Osimhen has scored 20 goals in 24 appearances this season, while Kane has scored 19 times in 32 matches.
