Rio Ferdinand's historic Newcastle taunt comes back to bite after latest Man United humiliation

Newcastle United fans have been quick to remind Rio Ferdinand of a historic taunt following Manchester United's latest humiliating defeat. Erik ten Hag's nightmare start at Old Trafford continued as the Red Devils were thrashed by Brentford in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Saturday evening.

Thomas Frank's rampant side raced into a four-goal lead before the break, as the Bees capitalised on physical mismatches and several errors from the visitors. Cristiano Ronaldo was handed his first start of the season, but was unable to provoke a response from the Red Devils as ten Hag's side now sit bottom of the table after two matches.

The lacklustre performances and transfers so far has led to the now familiar televised debates detailing Manchester United's current plight. Gary Neville once again took aim at the Glazer family in his post-match comments, criticising the owners for their lack of investment in the club's infrastructure despite their lavish transfer spending in recent years.

The Red Devils' ongoing troubles has led several Newcastle fans to remind Ferdinand of his unpopular comments during the Mike Ashley era. The former Manchester United defender drew the ire of the Toon Army for his questionable defences of the unpopular former owner.

Ferdinand suggested on more than one occasion that Newcastle supporters should be grateful for Ashley's work at the club, even going so far as to suggest they should thank the Frasers Group magnate for spending following the second relegation of his tenure in 2016. The BT Sport pundit also claimed disgruntled fans should simply 'round up' their money to buy the club off Ashley prior to the takeover in October.

A social media post from January 2019 which draws striking parallels to Manchester United's current predicament has resurfaced, much to the delight of numerous Magpies fans. Ferdinand posted: "NUFC fans good morning to you all!! Ya clubs turning a profit, no debt, oh and playing in the PL! Terrible!"

The post has been quote tweeted by several Newcastle fans who have been quick to remind Ferdinand of his previously controversial comments about the club. Here is a look at how Magpies supporters have been quick to remind the pundit given his former club's struggles so far this season.

'Evening Rio'

'Good on you'

'Love and hugs'

'Practice what you preached'

'Put your hand in your pocket'

'You ok?'
