Rio Ferdinand has admitted he was never confident of Manchester United’s chance against Everton in a damning verdict of his former club.
United yet again produced a dismal display as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park to put their top four hopes into further jeopardy. Anthony Gordon’s deflected first-half strike was enough for Frank Lampard’s struggling side to pick up a much-needed win in their battle against relegation.
Despite falling behind midway through the first half, United always looked unlikely to get back into the game as they put in yet another meek performance in what has been a dreadful season. With just seven games remaining, their chances of reaching fourth now hang by a thread.

Much like their draw with Leicester the week before, the defeat on Merseyside summed up their dismal campaign and arguably saw them hit a new low. Worryingly for United, their former defender Ferdinand saw the result coming.
“Before the game I said even though with how bad Everton have been in terms of results and their position in the league table, I still wasn’t sure if United would get a result today. That said a lot about where Man United are,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“Very unpredictable when you go into a game, you don’t know what to expect. You don’t know what you’re going to get out of them, individually or collectively as a team.
“It’s not a good place to be, especially trying to qualify for the Champions League. There’s teams now that will be bouncing into their games with confidence that United are a step away further from challenging for the top four.”
