Rio Ferdinand reacts to Manchester United's deadline day swoop for Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that his old club could not have done any better than Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer on transfer deadline day.

MEN Sport understands that the Reds are confident of completing the signing of Sabitzer on loan before the 11pm deadline this evening. The 28-year-old has been identified as a short-term option to replace the injured Christian Eriksen.

United announced earlier today that Eriksen will be out until late April or early May with a ankle injury that he sustained in the FA Cup victory over Reading at the weekend. Sabitzer, who previously faced the Reds while at RB Leipzig, joined Bayern in 2021.

However, since then he has struggled to cement a starting place at the Bundesliga giants. Despite this, Ferdinand told the FIVE’s transfer deadline day podcast that the Reds should not be worried about his perceived lack of game time for Bayern.

"I’m absolutely delighted," Ferdinand explained. "If I could go and get a short-term replacement at the drop of the hat for Eriksen, Sabitzer is a player that you’d say: 'Oh if I can get him I’d take him.'

"I’ve watched a hell of a lot of this player when he was at Leipzig in the Champions League – he played with [Christopher] Nkunku and the guys there, and he was sensational – integral to everything they’ve done there. Yes he’s gone to Bayern Munich and hasn’t tore it up there on a regular basis, but the players he’s behind are household names.

"I think he will be a really good signing – really experienced player, played in big games in the Champions League and he knows his way round a football pitch. For what Manchester United need in the short window they had to sign a player – they couldn’t have done any better, so well done Manchester United’s recruitment team."
