Rio Ferdinand prediction backfires spectacularly after Liverpool eviscerate Man United

Liverpool’s emphatic win over Manchester United will have left Rio Ferdinand regretting his pre-match comments.

The Reds claimed a historic 7-0 victory over their bitter rivals in the Premier League clash on Sunday at Anfield. Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo scored two goals each, with Roberto Firmino rounding off the scoring.

Jurgen Klopp’s side moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table with the victory. They are now three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.

Liverpool went into the game 10 points behind Man United, who are third in the table. Before the match, Red Devils legend Ferdinand was rather confident with his prediction.

Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand was asked if he was feeling any nerves going into the contest.

"Nervous? This is the most confident I've been going into a Liverpool fixture for the last six or seven years," Ferdinand said. "I think Man United are on the up whereas Liverpool have stagnated and taken a couple of steps backwards.

"They've been on a formidable run the last few years, but they aren't the Liverpool team that we've seen the last few years at the moment. What a time to go to Anfield, it's the best place to win as a Man United player."

The defeat for United was their biggest loss in the top flight since a 7-0 hammering at the hands of Wolves in December 1931. For Liverpool, it’s the biggest win over their rivals from Old Trafford.
