Rio Ferdinand names Ole Gunnar Solskjaer problem Manchester United haven't solved

Rio Ferdinand has singled out a problem that caused Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked as one that is still haunting Manchester United.

United disappointed in the early kick off on Saturday, losing 1-0 to Everton as an Anthony Gordon deflected strike proved decisive. Before the Toffees took the lead, Marcus Rashford was denied twice by Jordan Pickford to keep the game level.

Ralf Rangnick's side failed to muster many chances and succumbed to a defeat that leaves a huge dent in United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. And after the match, Ferdinand explained the identity crisis that means Rangnick's side are struggling on the pitch, months on from Solskjaer's sacking.

"That’s why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn’t here anymore," he explained. "People were saying ‘there’s no play style, no identity’.

"Today, when you look at the way they attack, there isn’t something you can look at and say ‘oh that’s how they’re playing’. That’s now how Man United play, there’s usually a structure, a way of playing at the top teams, but it isn’t there at the moment. They look lost to be honest."

United remain on 51 points in seventh, now six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who responded by thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 on Saturday evening, to take charge of the race for the top four.
